Hi fellow arrow slinger,
My name is Gary Olsen. I'm a bowhunter. After God and family, bowhunting is first and foremost on my mind at any given time. My bowhunting buddy Mike Misch shares my passion. We've been bowhunting together for 28 years. I hunted with a recurve for 13 years before switching to a compound. In 1990, we went on an Alaskan wilderness float trip outfitted by Jay Massey. Jay inspired us to try traditional bowhunting again. The next season Mike switched to a recurve. I dug out a couple of my old recurves and started shooting them again.
While on our float trip we met Mike Carroll. We struck up a friendship. Mike builds longbows. In 1996 he built a longbow for Mike Misch. I was so impressed with it that I had him build one for me also. Since that time we've been hunting exclusively with longbows. All three of us are Christians. We enjoy the fellowship that we share beneath the broad skies of God's Creation.
We've been videotaping our bowhunts since 1986, after our first trip to Alaska. I was so inspired by that trip that I felt a need to try to capture some of the adventure and excitement on videotape. I've been to Alaska 9 times so far, and videotaped 8 of them. 5 of those were moose hunts and 4 were caribou hunts. We also videotaped bowhunts for black bear and whitetail deer. We made these videos for ourselves, to help us to remember our experiences and to be able to share them with others. We made a few copies to share with friends and relatives. Many people that viewed our videos wanted copies to keep. We soon found ourselves making dozens of copies and giving them away free. That became expensive for us, so we started charging for them. No person that bought a copy ever complained that he didn't get his moneys worth.
I started editing our videos on a computer, and burning them onto DVDs. They are fully narrated and also include music and special effects. I purchased a lot of expensive equipment to be able to do this. But, I felt it was necessary to produce a quality product. We have no sponsors or commercial backers. Consequently, we don't make much money by selling these. In fact, I'll be happy if we can break even. We enjoy sharing our experiences and any knowledge we may have accumulated there in.
We try to capture the essence of the experience; the fun, the adventure, the success or failure. People that watch our videos are impressed by the fact that there are no commercials, no fake scenes or dramatizations. Everything that you see is real, just as it happened.
