The Canadian Moose
The moose is the largest member of the deer family. Therefore, and even for a male weighing 800 to 1200 pounds, the moose should be bowhunted like his small cousin with care and a lot of precaution. Like deer, moose are gifted with fine hearing and a particularly keen sense of smell. In our hunting territory, the rutting season usually begins around the second half of September. That's the best time for bowhunting trophy bulls.

Bowhunting Techniques
Ground stalking near paths used by animals is possible during wet or snowy days. When the weather is cool and dry, the archer prefers to wait in his tree-stand or ground blind, near a pond or a wellused trail. The moose - male, female and calf - can be called in close enough for a shoot by the hunter or the guide. During dry or stormy days, we recommend to stay downwind near a swamp surrounded by thick forest. In order to be successful, bowhunters usually spend the entire day in the bush, walking and stalking moose.

Best Bowhunting Equipment For Hunting Moose
The best hunting bow for taking a large trophy bull should have a draw weight of 60 to 75 pounds. The best arrows are heavy for deep and efficient penetration. Easton XX75 arrows such as 21-17, 22-16, 23-15 are perfect. Wood is still the best choice for traditional archers. Arrows should be mounted with bright colored fletching. A good arrow weight is 550 to 650 grains. Broadheads must be 125 grains or more mounted with 2, 3 or 4 strong razor-sharp blades.

Technical Hunting Details
- You don't need extra arrow speed. Unlike their cousin the whitetail deer, moose don't jump the string.
- Experience has proved that ultra-lite arrows and over-draws are not recommended for this robust giant.
- Spray feathers with water-proofing such as silicone.
- The less gadgetry you use, the less trouble you will have in the northern wilderness.
- We strongly encourage bow weights over 65 pounds. Sharp, well constructed broadheads are important as bone structure is heavy and hides are thick.
