#A344. Trophy Mule Deer Hunt in British Columbia
Rocky Mountain Mule Deer During The Rutting Season
Be prepared for an unique hunting experience in the beautiful mountains of British Columbia. You will pursue the mule deer bucks during the rutting season, when most mountain tops are already covered by a dick layer of snow. It seems that mule deer like such remote and snowed-in areas during the rutting season. They gather within the protective cover of the dense pine forest, far away from the local hunters. Once you have located such a winter range, it is like winning the jackpot to a hunter. Some of these places look like mule deer highways.
Now here is the first good news about this hunt: there are really plenty of mule deer. The second good news is that those mule deer are really large, body wise (have seen deer up to 300 lbs) and of course antlers wise. It is definitely a prime choice for hunting trophy mule deer either with the bow or the rifle. Third but not last, we will provide you with a top- notch guide; this guy will get you a mule deer buck, it's guaranteed. Once a nice sized track is discovered, he will go after the buck until he (the buck) makes a mistake such as back-tracking or stopping to see who's coming after him. And those big boys always make such a fatal mistake.
This brings us to the "how to hunt mule deer" stuff. There are actually 2 ways to hunt trophy mule deer when in the mountains of BC (forget about everything you have read about mule deer hunting so far). The first and very productive technique is the one I just described above. The second technique has been developed by our guide to suit the needs and limitation of the bowhunter. All I can say is that he uses tree-stands as for whitetail hunting; his ways and placement choice are very productive. The stands are located in the hottest areas high up by the alpine, where you will see plenty of mule deer. All you have to do is to wait for a trophy buck - 150 to 180 P"&"Y - to pass within shooting range and bag him with a well placed arrow. Our hunting area is managed for trophy hunting--the minimum requirement for a shootable mule deer buck is 4x4.
